• The National Quality Forum (NQF) has awarded the 2014 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality at the Local Level to North Shore-LIJ Health System in Great Neck, N.Y., for its work to reduce sepsis mortality. Launched in 2002 by NQF and The Joint Commission, the patient safety awards program honors the late John M. Eisenberg, M.D., M.B.A., former administrator of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). From 2009 to 2014, North Shore-LIJ Health System, an NQF member since 2002, was able to reduce sepsis mortality by 50 percent at 10 acute care hospitals in its system. NQF spoke recently with Michael Dowling, president and CEO of the health system, about the sepsis initiative and the Eisenberg award.
