National Voluntary Consensus Standards for Hospital Psychiatric Care
Current Activity: The appeals period closed on June 4, 2010.
The Opportunity
Mental health disorders are common within the United States; an estimated 57.7 million people suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, including 6 percent of those individuals who suffer from a serious mental illness.1 Many of these patients will have an episode of hospital care. The National Quality Forum is considering these inpatient psychiatric process measures as standards to evaluate the performance of general hospitals with psychiatric units and freestanding psychiatric hospitals.
About the Project
This project began in February 2009. These measures are being considered to complement the psychiatric medication management measures endorsed in the Medication Management project.

Review has been conducted by a Technical Advisory Panel of three experts in psychiatric care, along with the Steering Committee convened for the Hospital Outcomes and Efficiency project.
