The Opportunity
As of 2003, the United States spent more than $450 billion per year on hospital care, publically available information on hospital quality was scarce. In 2003, initiatives for measuring and reporting the quality of hospital care were expanding, and with this rapid expansion came concerns related to the burden of measurement and reporting and the need for standardization so that valid comparisons among hospitals can be made.

In this project, NQF identified guiding principles to promote standardization of hospital measurement and reporting, drive measure set improvement, and support implementation of standardized measure sets.
