Senior Program Director, Patient Safety
Reports to: SVP, Performance Measures

The Senior Program Director for Patient Safety is responsible for the execution and oversight of all NQF projects related to patient safety, including consensus development projects related to practices and measures.   The Senior Program Director is specifically responsible for the update and maintenance of NQF Safe Practices as well as Serious Reportable Events.  In addition, the Senior Program Director is expected to take an active role in securing funding for projects and for generating potential new project ideas.  The SPD will also engage in a variety of communication activities -- both internal and external to the organization-- to promote the mission of the NQF related to patient safety. 

Project Management

The Senior Program Director is a primary point of contact for assigned projects related to patient safety and is responsible for the following:

  • Serve as the lead for safety-related projects, including safe practices and related measures, serious reportable events, and safety-related issues across the continuum of health care, including healthcare associated infections and medication safety.
  • Ensuring timely updating and maintenance of all NQF related patient safety practices and measures.
  • Serve as the point-of-contact with NQF committees related to safe practices and serious reportable events.
  • Direct all aspects of  projects including:
    • Oversight of the committee selection process to ensure representation from relevant stakeholder groups;
    • Development of the project plan, timeline for deliverables;
    • Draft briefing materials and other supporting documents;
    • Review and synthesize the  evidence base to support committee deliberations;
    • Write final reports and other products, such as issue briefs, as applicable;
    • Oversight of the public comment process and ensure that all stakeholder voices are represented;
    • Produce final materials for consideration of endorsement for the Consensus Standards Approval Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Guide and mentor staff working on projects within the senior program director’s purview.

Communication and Outreach

  • Serve as the NQF expert on patient safety;
  • Identify opportunities for future projects and/or collaboration;
  • Present NQF projects, mission and goals at outside meetings and conferences;

Intra-Departmental Collaboration

  • Support identification of topics for membership and annual meetings.
  • Support synchronization and harmonization of consensus standards, goal and priority setting and education and outreach projects and work.

Organizational Duties

  • Support executive staff in planning and implementation of strategic initiatives related to patient safety.
  • Participate in development of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Support organizational improvement and enhancement groups and activities such as organization scorecard development and implementation, and the website revamp development and implementation.
