President's Message

I am pleased to welcome you to the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) website. 

The American health care system faces enormous challenges – serious shortcomings in the safety and effectiveness of care, rising health care costs, and growing numbers of uninsured. Most health care leaders believe that the current health care system is not sustainable, and that many tough decisions and tradeoffs lie ahead.  As our nation embarks on what will likely be a period of fundamental change, a strong and resolute voice on quality will be critical.

The NQF’s broad and diverse membership makes it well positioned to “maintain a constant drumbeat” for quality.  Its unique structure allows private and public sector stakeholders at the national, regional and local levels, to work in partnership to devise and implement solutions to the serious challenges confronting the health care sector.
The Forum’s work in setting measurement priorities and endorsing national voluntary consensus standards along with its executive educational programs and outreach provide an excellent opportunity to bridge policy and practice.

It is our sincere hope that this website will be an invaluable tool to inform those in the healthcare community about the NQF, its work, and the opportunity it provides organizations to take a leadership role in healthcare quality issues and work toward making patient care safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable
