Abstract

Patients in the United States receive most of their healthcare in ambulatory care settings.  However, there is a lack of agreed-upon quality measures aimed at assessing the performance of ambulatory care providers.   The National Quality Forum’s “Standardizing Ambulatory Care Performance Measures” project was a multiyear endeavor seeking consensus on standardized measures of outpatient care performance and reporting.  Part 1 of this report identifies voluntary consensus standards for a variety of conditions --heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, prevention, depression, medication management, patient experience with care, and care coordination. Part 2 of the report contains additional work that addresses patient experience with care and special settings of care.  In addition, it includes measures to address healthcare disparities and recommendations for measure implementation.
