Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the most common preventable cause of hospital death in the United States. While NQF has targeted VTE as a serious patient safety threat, VTE prevention and care remain inadequate and quality measurement for this condition remains underdeveloped. This report endorses a statement of organizational policy that identifies specific domains of VTE prevention and care, key characteristics of preferred practices and 2 measures for of VTE prophylaxis for surgery patients. The report also establishes a framework for the development of a set of performance measures and provides guidance for institutions seeking to take immediate action.
