NQF Statement on the White House Effort to Combat Antibiotic Resistance

“The National Quality Forum (NQF) applauds the Administration’s attention to the more responsible use of antibiotics nationwide, and we are excited to participate in this collaboration, including today’s White House summit.

“NQF’s commitment to slowing the rise of antibiotic-resistant infections is three-fold. We will work with federal agencies and private-sector stakeholders to accelerate the development, submission, and implementation of performance measures that can be used in quality improvement and accountability programs. We have convened a multistakeholder Action Team to activate our 400+ organizational members and promote a shared agenda for progress that is aligned with the National Action Plan to Combat Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. We also are offering educational and engagement opportunities to our members to encourage ongoing learning and sharing of more uniform antibiotic stewardship processes across healthcare settings.

“An estimated 23,000 people die each year because of drug-resistant bacteria, according to the CDC. It’s critical that we act now to identify actions to change how we use antibiotics both in our healthcare system and our food supply.”
