National Quality Forum Statement on Derek Chauvin Verdict

Washington, DC – Today, National Quality Forum (NQF) interim President and CEO Chris Queram issued the following statement in response to the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer found guilty of murdering George Floyd:

“It was encouraging to hear the jury’s decision in George Floyd’s death, which brings arduous accountability to what we all witnessed with our own eyes: another Black life senselessly suffocated under police brutality. Yesterday’s verdict is a small step forward in our nation’s quest for racial equality and justice. Across every sector of our society much work remains for each of us to eliminate the structural racism that people of color face every day.

In a time such as this, it is important to declare, once again, our shared commitment to condemn and confront systemic racism in all forms. It is reassuring to know we are not alone in this journey, as we stand among the vanguard of organizations, both large and small, pledging support to policies, practices, and personal behaviors that demonstrate this commitment through both word and deed. It is manifest in our approach to advancing the goals of health equity and diversity/inclusion/equity as reflected in our Strategic Plan.

Through our unique convening power, we are committed to ensuring every voice is represented at the NQF table to drive measurable health improvements together. As an organization whose vision is ‘every person experiences high value care and optimal health outcomes,’ we feel a responsibility to continue confronting the scourge of discrimination at the heart of long-standing inequities in achieving person-centered care. Together with unwavering engagement from NQF Members and our partners, we will continue advancing measurement science to improve health and ensure healthcare is safe, high quality, and high value for every person, every time, everywhere.”
