Friends of NQF Statement on ‘Promoting Health Care Quality Act of 2022’

Friends of NQF Co-Chairs Leah Binder, President & CEO of The Leapfrog Group; and Charles N. Kahn III, President & CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals, released the following statement on the introduction of H.R. 8201, the “Promoting Health Care Quality Act of 2022.

We applaud Representatives Judy Chu (D-CA-27) and Earl (Buddy) L. Carter (R-GA-1) for their continued leadership and dedication to improving the quality of healthcare in the US by introducing the bipartisan “Promoting Health Care Quality Act of 2022.”

This important legislation will restore funding and resources necessary to measure and improve the quality of healthcare provided under the Medicare program that nearly 64 million Americans rely upon. Funding was slashed from $26 million in FY2021 to $20 million in FY2022. As the nation continues to grapple with the global pandemic, the need for quality, value-based care is more critical than ever, and the US healthcare system must continue to reduce burden while improving quality. Funding NQF to advance the next generation of healthcare quality is vital to sustaining these efforts.

The Friends of NQF is a multistakeholder coalition of organizations committed to voicing support for NQF’s mission to improve the nation’s health through quality measurement and improvement. NQF partners with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to strengthen healthcare quality measurement to support improvements to care and patient outcomes. This crucial work helps ensure patients have access to safe, effective, and equitable care.

“As a pharmacist in Congress and a lifelong health care professional, I understand the importance of providing high-quality and affordable medical care for patients,” said Rep. Carter. “Fully funding the National Quality Forum will help our nation achieve cost-efficient, high-quality, value-based health care that puts patients first.”

Fundamental to addressing the challenges throughout healthcare is building a stronger system—more focused, cohesive, resilient, and responsive. Multistakeholder collaboration is essential to breaking down silos across the health system, addressing healthcare disparities, embracing innovation, and creating patient-driven measures of quality. The “Promoting Health Care Quality Act” will help safeguard this important work so that it can continue unabated at a time when it is most needed.
