• As the National Quality Forum approaches the conclusion of its 15th anniversary, NQF is taking the lead to define a new national approach to healthcare quality and measurement. Through a new initiative, Healthcare Quality 2.0, NQF is engaging leaders across the healthcare spectrum to envision the future, identify the action steps necessary to realize that vision and articulate NQF’s role in the next evolution of the quality measurement enterprise.

This initiative is based on the framework upon which NQF was built 15 years ago with the goal of revising and enhancing that framework to reflect the challenges and opportunities of the current healthcare environment. To launch this initiative, NQF held, in conjunction with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, an initial discussion with quality leaders including members of the original Strategic Framework Board, who conceived of NQF and its national role. NQF will continue discussions with key stakeholders throughout the coming months to better define this vision.

Early discussions identified core areas where more work is needed, including leveraging new data sources for healthcare improvement. To explore this specific issue further, NQF is launching a special initiative, supported by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation and the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation. This effort will identify practical strategies for increasing the quantity and quality of data for systematic improvements in health and healthcare.

“As an enterprise, it’s important to look back and reflect on what we’ve accomplished—and what we didn’t—as we move forward together to shape the future of quality,” said Christine Cassel, M.D., NQF President and CEO.
