NQF 2011 National Healthcare Quality Award to Reward Accountable CareThe National Quality Forum (NQF) has opened the application period for its 2011 National Healthcare Quality Award, which recognizes exceptional organizational leadership and innovation to achieve national goals for quality improvement. NQF Endorses National Voluntary Consensus Standards Washington, DC (May 13, 2010) – At its meeting on May 5, the National Quality Forum’s Board of Directors ratified the Consensus Standards and Approval Committee’s (CSAC) recommendations to endorse standards for hospital psychiatric care, statin medication at discharge, and HCAHPS.

NQF Forms New Health IT Advisory CommitteeTo guide its ongoing work in health information technology, the National Quality Forum has formed a new Health Information Technology
Advisory Committee (HITAC). Members of the new advisory committee
represent a wide range of healthcare stakeholders, including consumers,
providers, clinicians, purchasers, suppliers, and public and community
healthcare.

NQF Endorses Measures for Hospital Psychiatric CareThe National
Quality Forum has endorsed two inpatient psychiatric measures that focus on
quality improvement in psychiatric hospitals and general hospitals with
psychiatric units. The endorsed measures
address the use of restraints and seclusion and complement psychiatric
medication management measures recently endorsed by NQF.

NQF to Release Updated Safe Practices Implementation GuideTo improve the quality and safety of healthcare in the United States,
the National Quality Forum (NQF) is releasing its updated manual Safe
Practices for Better Healthcare. The 34 Safe Practices outlined in the
manual are tools to prevent healthcare errors and address common issues
like healthcare-associated infections, medication errors, surgical
errors, and pressure ulcers.

Practice Makes Perfect - Tips for Safer HealthcareHealthcare in the United States isn’t as safe as it should be. Preventable errors cost the U.S. an estimated 98,000 lives and $17 billion to $29 billion per year in healthcare expenses, lost worker productivity, lost income, and disability. While healthcare spending grows more than 7 percent per year, it is estimated that patient safety is improving by only 1 percent.

NQF Presents Quality Data Set at HIMSSThe National Quality Forum (NQF) is advancing its efforts to support an effective infrastructure for quality improvement through the use of electronic platforms. NQF is participating in this year’s HIMSS10 Interoperability Showcase in Atlanta from March 1-3, 2010. The Interoperability Showcase provides attendees with hands-on experience, allowing them to experience the benefits of well-coordinated HIT as they walk through each step of the care delivery process as a patient. Last year’s showcase drew over 4,000 attendees.

NQF Endorses Measures to Incrementally Advance Use of Electronic Data for Quality ImprovementAs an incremental step toward wider use of electronic data platforms to measure, report, and improve quality, NQF has endorsed 70 measures that combine data from two or more common electronic sources such as administrative claims, pharmacy and laboratory systems, and registries. The measures cover sixteen conditions, including bone and joint conditions, cardiovascular disease, asthma and respiratory illness, and diabetes.
