The Opportunity
Over the past decade, the National Quality Forum (NQF) has endorsed more than 630 healthcare performance measures addressing many important areas of health and healthcare. Decision makers—including policy makers and measure developers— often lack relevant information needed to effectively target limited resources to develop, implement, and endorse measures that will drive improvement. Moreover, stakeholders need to understand how a measure performs when in use, and the possible issues or risks that may be associated with the measure’s implementation. These efforts would help address whether a measure meets the intended effect of improving quality of care and health outcomes as well as evaluate unintended consequences, if any. By gathering meaningful, timely, and comprehensive feedback on measures in use, these efforts would also help ensure that the quality improvement enterprise itself undergoes continuous improvement.
About this Project
The Measure Feedback Loop Committee will identify and recommend innovative, efficient, and effective approaches to incorporate real-time feedback from clinicians, healthcare facilities, and other measure end-users. There is a significant stakeholder need for information on how a measure performs when in use, and possible issues or risks associated with measure implementation. This information would help inform stakeholders as to whether a measure has its intended effect on improving quality of care and health outcomes, and any unintended consequences.
This project will involve:
- The development of an Environmental Scan Report on measure performance data;
- The development of a document on existing CDP Use and Usability Information;
- The development of a paper outlining options for piloting a measure feedback loop initiative; and
- The development of an implementation plan for the selected measure feedback loop pilot.
Funding
This project is funded under NQF’s contract with the Department of Health and Human Services.
